The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recognized the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and accepted the list of 471 candidates it submitted for the 2027 general elections, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate.
INEC National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna disclosed that the electoral body granted the Mark-led leadership access to its candidate nomination portal following the Supreme Court judgment affirming its leadership of the party.
According to Haruna, the recognized faction has so far submitted candidates for 471 elective positions, comprising one presidential candidate, 109 senatorial candidates and 360 House of Representatives candidates.
He explained that the commission acted in line with the apex court’s ruling and would not accept nominations from the rival faction, whose appeal for recognition had failed.
Haruna, however, said INEC would carefully review the Certified True Copy of the Court of Appeal judgment delivered on Monday before determining whether it has any implications for the commission’s position.
He expressed optimism that the judgment would be made available within 48 hours, after which the commission would study its contents and announce any further decisions if necessary.
