The Southern Kaduna Peoples’ United Associations (SOKAPU) Youth Wing has demanded a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into the death of Miss Mary Habila, calling the incident a tragedy that requires truth and accountability.
In a press statement signed by its National Youth Leader, Amb. Solomon Simon, MHSN, the group expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young woman from Southern Kaduna, stating that her death under suspicious circumstances has left her family, community, and many Nigerians seeking answers.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Mary Habila. No parent should have to bury a child, and no family should have to endure uncertainty while mourning the loss of a loved one,” the statement read. The group prayed for strength for the family and for Mary to rest in peace.
SOKAPU Youth Wing emphasized that its call is not meant to incite passions or prejudge anyone, but is based on the principle that every human life is sacred and every Nigerian deserves justice.
The group noted that it has been following various reports about the incident, including public statements by the Honorable Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, as well as updates from the Nigeria Police Force. It was observed that different accounts of the circumstances surrounding Mary Habila’s death are now in the public domain.
“Conflicting narratives should never replace a thorough investigation. Rather, they highlight the need for investigators to establish the facts beyond a reasonable doubt,” the statement said.
SOKAPU stated that a young Nigerian has lost her life, her family deserves answers, the public deserves the truth, and justice must be served.
The organization called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Ebonyi State Police Command, and all relevant authorities to conduct a thorough, independent, impartial, and transparent investigation.
Specifically, SOKAPU urged that the investigation be carried out without fear, favor, or interference; that all legal procedures be followed professionally and transparently; that the family be kept informed of major developments; and that the findings be made public in accordance with the law.
The group added that if anyone is found guilty after the investigation, they should face the full weight of the law, regardless of their status, office, or influence.
While acknowledging reports of the family’s stance on further forensic procedures, SOKAPU said it respects their grief but encourages cooperation with lawful processes that can uncover the truth. It emphasized that justice is best served when investigations are professional, and the family is treated with dignity and compassion.
The Youth Wing also called on the Federal Government to ensure that relevant agencies fulfill their constitutional duties independently, noting that public trust is strengthened when justice is both done and seen to be done.
It further urged the media to report responsibly by focusing on verified facts rather than speculation, and called on the people of Southern Kaduna to remain calm and peaceful.
“Truth does not fear investigation, and transparency protects both the innocent and the accused. A credible investigation benefits everyone by clearing those who are innocent and holding those who are guilty,” the statement added.
SOKAPU concluded that this issue extends beyond individual families or communities; it’s about the value placed on human life and whether every Nigerian can trust that the truth will be pursued fairly.
“Mary Habila can no longer speak for herself. Her family mourns, and her community grieves. The responsibility to uncover the truth now lies with the institutions empowered by law to do so. We urge them to fulfill that duty with courage, professionalism, integrity, and fairness,” Amb. Simon said.
The group ended with a prayer: “May justice prevail. May truth triumph. And may the soul of Miss Mary Habila rest in perfect peace.”
