Orire: Our Security Chiefs Deserve GCON National Honours, Opposition Rep Agbese writes PBAT

*Salutes Army for foisting abduction of girls at Monguno

Rep. Philip Agbese, the lawmaker representing Ado/ Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo Federal Constituency and leader of Labour in Benue State, has urger President Bola Tinubu to confer Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) national honours on Nigeria’s top security chiefs.

The commendation, contained in a speech at the weekend, highlights recent successes including the rescue of schoolchildren and teachers in Orire, Oyo State, and the successful repulsion of an abduction attempt in Monguno, Borno State on July 19.

Agbese specifically praised the troops’ swift action in Monguno, where troops foiled an ISWAP attempt to abduct students.

“The successful resolution of the Orire abduction after 56 days and the decisive intervention in Monguno today demonstrate the growing effectiveness of our security apparatus under your leadership,” Agbese wrote in the letter to President Tinubu.

“Our Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, and other principal officers deserve the prestigious GCON honours for restoring hope to families and protecting the future of our children. These achievements merit national recognition.”

In the early hours of Sunday, suspected ISWAP terrorists attempted to storm the Federal Government Girls College in Monguno, which was serving as temporary accommodation for polytechnic students.

Security forces from Operation HADIN KAI, supported by police, engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to flee without abducting any of the 46 students.

All students were evacuated to safety at Kinnasara Barracks, though some tragically lost their lives to stray bullets.

The military has launched pursuits for the fleeing terrorists and investigations into local collaborators.

“Today’s operation in Monguno is a clear demonstration of the Army’s vigilance and rapid response capability. By foiling the abduction of these girls, our troops have prevented another national tragedy,” Agbese stated.

“I salute the gallant officers and men who risked their lives. Their professionalism under Operation HADIN KAI should inspire confidence across the Northeast and the entire country.”

The Orire rescue, announced around July 10, involved the safe return of dozens of pupils and teachers abducted on May 15 from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area.

“The safe return of the Orire victims remains a victory worth celebrating. It shows what coordinated intelligence and military efforts can achieve,” Agbese remarked.

“As a member of the opposition, I believe in giving credit where it is due. Honouring our security chiefs with GCON will boost morale and signal that excellence in protecting Nigerians transcends partisan lines.”

The Labour Party representative urged sustained investment in equipment, intelligence, and personnel welfare to build on these gains and prevent future incidents.

“Mr President, let this be the beginning of greater collaboration. Nigerian parents and students deserve nothing less than absolute safety in their schools and communities,” Agbese emphasized in closing his letter.

“The heroes who delivered these results must be celebrated. GCON for our security leadership is a fitting tribute to their service and sacrifice.”
