With just four days to the start of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has congratulated Team Nigeria sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi following his outstanding victory in the men’s 100m at the London Diamond League on Saturday.
Ajayi produced another world-class performance, equalling the Nigerian men’s 100m national record of 9.84 seconds (−0.7) for the third time this season to defeat reigning World Championship silver medalist Oblique Seville of Jamaica, who finished second in 9.87 seconds.
The victory further underlines Ajayi’s status as one of Nigeria’s brightest medal prospects heading into the Commonwealth Games.
The impressive run serves as a major statement ahead of Glasgow 2026, where Ajayi will proudly represent Team Nigeria and carry the nation’s hopes in one of the Games’ most anticipated events.
Also representing Nigeria at the London Diamond League was Ezekiel Nathaniel, who finished fourth in the men’s 400m hurdles with a time of 48.30 seconds. World record holder Karsten Warholm won the race in a meeting record of 46.61 seconds, ahead of Emil Agyekum (47.45) and Abderrahman Samba (48.10).
The National Sports Commission commended both athletes for their impressive performances on the global stage, noting that their form provides further confidence in Team Nigeria’s preparations as the countdown to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games enters its final days.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from July 23 to Aug. 2, bringing together more than 3,000 athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in 10 sports.
Team Nigeria will be aiming to build on its proud Commonwealth Games legacy, with the National Sports Commission expressing confidence that the country’s athletes are well prepared to challenge for medals and make the nation proud on the international stage.
