ActionAid translates Ebola preventive hints into Igala, pidgin

Date:

action-aidActionAid Nigeria, an NGO, has translated Ebola virus awareness and preventive messages into Igala language and pidgin.

This was done in collaboration with Kogi-based Participation Initiative for Behavioural Change in Development (PIBCID).

Mr. Victor Adejoh, Programme Manager of ActionAid/Executive Director, PIBCID, disclosed this while distributing the leaflets to community representatives from Igalamela/Odolu and Adavi Local Government Areas of Kogi.

Adejoh said in Lokoja on Thursday, that the awareness campaign on the Ebola virus had been concentrated in the urban areas, noting that the rural areas were at higher risk if the virus finds its way into any community.

He called for concerted awareness campaign especially among the rural communities to curtail the spread of the disease.

The leaflets, according to him, contained information on the symptoms of the disease at its initial and advanced stages.

He said that it also dwelled on hints on personal hygiene, environmental cleanliness and avoidance of infected persons and corpses.

The programme manager said the communities were advised in the leaflets to avoid body contact with infected persons, body fluids like blood, saliva, sweat and consumption of bush meat, especially monkeys and bats.

“These leaflets in Igala language and pidgin are to reach out to those at the grassroots and relay the message of prevention and ensure citizens of Kogi keyed into government’s preventive measures.
