NNPP chair accuses Kwankwaso of pursuing personal agenda in 2023 election

National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Agbo Gilbert Major, has accused the party’s former presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, of using the NNPP to advance his personal political interests during the 2023 general election.
Major made the allegation on Tuesday while speaking during an interview on Trust TV, monitored in Abuja, where he claimed Kwankwaso’s campaign activities suggested he was more interested in consolidating his influence in Kano than mounting a nationwide presidential campaign.
According to the NNPP chairman, Kwankwaso visited only a handful of states during the campaign and largely neglected the South-East and South-West, concentrating instead on Kano and parts of Jigawa State.
Major said he had raised concerns at the time, insisting it did not appear that Kwankwaso was genuinely contesting for the presidency.
“He only went to Kano. So it became clear to me that his interest was Kano, and then maybe part of Jigawa State,” he said.
The NNPP chairman alleged that the former Kano governor merely used the party as a “bargaining chip” to advance his personal ambitions.
Kwankwaso, who flew the NNPP’s flag in the 2023 presidential election, is now the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the next general election.
Despite Kwankwaso’s exit, Major maintained that the NNPP remains active, noting that the party has concluded the upload of its National Assembly candidates and presidential candidate ahead of the forthcoming polls.
