The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has scaled up its ongoing citywide desilting and drainage maintenance operations across major districts in the Federal Capital City to control flooding andl protect critical public infrastructure.
The comprehensive flood-mitigation campaign, executed through the Department of Facilities Maintenance and Management (DFMM), is designed to clear the capital city’s drainage network, facilitate unobstructed stormwater flow, and minimize rain-induced disruptions for residents and local businesses.
According to a press statement released on Thursday by David Udo of the Information and Public Relations Unit of the DFMM, maintenance crews are systematically removing accumulated silt, debris, and waste from gully inlets, manholes, and open channels in high-density and strategic areas.
Affected zones include Asokoro District, Lifecamp, Guzape, Wuse, Katampe, Gwarinpa, and Asokoro Extension.
It noted that in Asokoro District specifically, targeted clearing and maintenance are underway along major transport corridors, such as Yakubu Gowon Crescent, Julius Nyerere Crescent, and Kwame Nkrumah Crescent.
Alongside drainage clearance, the FCTA is executing pothole patch-ups in select areas to improve road safety, prevent traffic congestion from waterlogging, and preserve smooth economic activities.
Preliminary reports indicate that completed project sections have already shown restored channel capacity and improved accessibility for vehicular movement across affected neighbourhoods.
Highlighting the scope of the project, the Director of the Department of Facilities Maintenance and Management, Engr. (Dr.) Ayuba A. Usman, emphasized that proactive structural maintenance remains essential to urban safety.
“The FCT Administration remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents through continuous maintenance of critical infrastructure.
“Effective drainage systems are indispensable to flood prevention, environmental sustainability, and the smooth functioning of economic activities across the capital city,” Usman stated.
He further warned against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into open gutters, identifying illegal waste disposal as a primary cause of urban flooding.
He called on residents to adopt responsible waste habits, noting that effective flood control relies on active public cooperation alongside government interventions.
