BREAKING: Abuja stadium shut down over alleged security threat

The management of the Moshood Abiola International Stadium, Abuja has on Monday, August 3, shut down the Moshood Abiola International Stadium following alleged intel of a planned security breach on the facility.

In the memo that was sent to all users of the stadium on late on Monday, the management said no entry would be allowed once the facility shuts down.

It further advised all those who have one thing or the other to do at the stadium to rally and evacuate within the stipulated time frame.

It could be recalled that the Shiite Islamic sect, led by Mallam Ibrahim El- Zakzaky has remained at loggerheads with the federal government over its religious processions and activities which have led to violent clashes with security agents, resulting to the loss of lives.

A member of the stadium management team, who pleaded anonymity told Peoples Daily Sports that the Shiite Islamic sect has been making several efforts to secure the stadium for their religious activities, adding that the security situation in the country, coupled with the previous violent attitude of the sect forced the stadium management to deny them access, and the eventual closure of all the facilities at the stadium to prevent any unforeseen breakdown of law and order.

The memo reads in parts; “This is to inform all individuals currently using or planning to access the Abuja Stadium pitch tomorrow that the Police Headquarters has reliably notified us of a credible security threat affecting the facility.

“Effective immediately, tonight (August 3, 2026), all entrances to the stadium will be closed down and remain shut until further directive from Police Headquarters.

“No entry will be permitted once closure takes effect tonight. All persons currently inside are advised to vacate the premises promptly and peacefully.

“Security personnel have been deployed to enforce this measure and ensure public safety.

“We urge everyone to remain calm, comply with all instructions from law enforcement, and avoid loitering around the stadium gates.

“Further updates will be communicated as soon as they are received from the Police Headquarters”, the memo added.

Already security operatives have taken over the facility pending when the Police Force Headquarters will relax the exercise.

The MKO Abiola International Stadium is Nigeria’s elite sporting facility which has the capacity of hosting all levels of national and international sporting activities including; football and track and field events.
