Senate Committee on Power in UK on tour of power installations
The Senate Committee on Power is in the United Kingdom on a study tour of the country’s electricity sector.
The tour is said to be part of ongoing legislative efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s power sector and deliver more reliable electricity to Nigerians.
The Senators are expected to participate in high-level engagement to deepen their work on the proposed Electricity Act Amendment Bill, 2026.
The amendment is aimed at addressing critical challenges within Nigeria’s electricity sector and creating a more effective framework for sustainable power delivery nationwide.
The study tour is providing the lawmakers with an opportunity to examine the organisational, institutional and governance structures that underpin the UK electricity sector, with particular focus on the regulation and coordination of generation, transmission, distribution and electricity trading.
The delegation is also examining the role of regulators and parliamentarians in sector oversight, alongside approaches to renewable energy integration, electricity market management, and the effective management of supply, demand and transmission constraints.
The engagements are expected to provide valuable lessons and comparative insights that will contribute to the ongoing review and strengthening of Nigeria’s electricity legislation.
Speaking on the importance of the study tour, a member of the committee, Senator Sunday Marshall Katung said the experience would enable lawmakers to engage directly with relevant stakeholders, examine international best practices and assess how successful approaches could be adapted to Nigeria’s unique circumstances.
He stressed the importance of an inclusive and evidence-based legislative process that takes into account the interests of all stakeholders while ensuring that the ultimate objective remains the delivery of reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity to Nigerians.
“Our responsibility as legislators is not only to make laws, but to ensure that those laws respond effectively to the realities and aspirations of our people. This engagement provides an opportunity to learn, exchange ideas and draw from international experience as we work towards a stronger and more efficient electricity sector in Nigeria.”
The insights gained from the study tour will contribute directly to the Senate Committee on Power’s deliberations on the proposed amendment, its oversight responsibilities and policy recommendations to the 10th Senate.
Senator Katung reaffirmed his commitment to working collaboratively with his colleagues, government agencies, industry stakeholders and development partners to advance the legislative and institutional reforms required to build a resilient, efficient and sustainable electricity sector that delivers meaningful improvements in the lives of Nigerians.
