Scores of members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Gagi ‘B’ Ward, Sokoto South Local Government Area, attributing their decision to the development projects executed by the Sokoto State Government under Governor Ahmed Aliyu.

The defection ceremony was attended by the Chairman of Sokoto South Local Government Area, Malam Ya’u Muhammad Danda, who also serves as Secretary of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Sokoto State Chapter.

Addressing the defectors, Danda commended them for joining the APC, describing their decision as a response to what he called the visible developmental strides of Governor Aliyu in Gagi ‘B’ Ward and across the state.

He also challenged the ADC governorship candidate to provide a public account of projects he facilitated for Sokoto State during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Governments and later as Deputy Governor.

Representing the Sokoto State APC leadership, the party’s State Chairman, Alhaji Haruna S. Gobir Adiya, and State Secretary, Barrister Muhammad Bello, formally received the new members and assured them of equal rights and opportunities within the party.

“From today, you are full members of the APC. It is now one family,” Bello said.

Prominent among the defectors were Alhaji Mustapha Maigandi, Alhaji Bello Tambuwal, Alhaji Muhammed Abubakar Ladan, a former Permanent Secretary at the Government House, former councillors Hon. Tukur Garba and Hon. Abubakar Yusuf, Hajiya Rabi Giyawa, Alhaji Abu Dan Kwara, Alhaji Amadu Mabera and Alhaji Sani Danda.

The member representing Sokoto South I Constituency in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Hon. Mustapha Abdullahi Dust, who played a key role in mobilising the defectors, described the development as a major boost for the APC, stating that Gagi ‘B’ Ward has become a stronghold of the ruling party.

The event was attended by the Deputy Chairman of Sokoto South Local Government Area, Hon. Faruk Garba, councillors, special advisers to the governor, political leaders, business figures, government officials and other stakeholders.

Political observers said the latest wave of defections further strengthens the APC’s position in Sokoto State ahead of the 2027 general elections, while reflecting continued shifts within the state’s political landscape.
