Nigeria’s beach volleyball duo of Joy Lawrence and Ifechukwu Odoh have departed the country to compete in the African U18 Girls’ Developmental Cup in Senegal.

The tournament is scheduled to take place in Saly from August 8 to 14, 2026, as part of preparations for the Youth Olympic Games.

Speaking ahead of the team’s departure, Nigeria’s coach, John Iwerima, said the players were in high spirits and ready to give their best at the developmental tournament.

Iwerima explained that the duo had undergone an intensive training programme in camp and were determined to represent the country well in Senegal.

He said, “The players are in high spirits and have prepared very well for this competition. They have undergone an intensive training programme in camp, and we are confident that they will give a good account of themselves.”

The former international added that the team’s target was not only to perform well at the Developmental Cup but also to use the experience as a stepping stone towards the forthcoming Youth Olympic Games.

“Our target is to make Nigeria proud and gain valuable experience that will help us at the Youth Olympic Games. We want the players to compete strongly, learn from every match and continue to improve,” he said.

Iwerima also commended the Nigeria Beach Volleyball Commission for its efforts towards the development and promotion of beach volleyball in the country and across Africa.
