Nigeria’s Super Falcons have lost their automatic qualification route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The decisive quarter-final was played on Sunday, August 9, at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, with Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen scoring the only goal in the 19th minute.
The Super Falcons pushed for an equaliser in the second half but were unable to break through Cameroon’s defence as the Indomitable Lionesses held on for victory.
The result means Nigeria will not secure one of the automatic African qualification places for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil through the WAFCON semi-finals. However, the Super Falcons’ World Cup hopes remain alive through the playoff route.
Nigeria had entered the tournament as defending champions but endured an inconsistent campaign, including a 3-2 defeat to Malawi in the group stage before recovering with victories over Zambia and Egypt.
The defeat to Cameroon also ends Nigeria’s hopes of defending their WAFCON title and represents a major setback for one of Africa’s most successful women’s football teams.
The Super Falcons will now have to navigate the remaining qualification pathway for a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
