Again, Kaduna House Speaker survives impeachment plot

The Speaker of Kaduna state House of Assembly, Hon. Shehu Tahir, yesterday survived another impeachment threat as majority of the House passed a vote of confidence on him and the leadership of the House.

The vote of confidence, which was moved via a motion by a member representing Kachia constituency, Hon David Umar and seconded by Hon Yakubu Yusuf, member representing Zaria Kewaye, on the floor of the House yesterday and termed “matter of urgency”, said, “it is important for the House to debunk allegation that were set to today to change its leadership commencing with the impeachment of the Speaker, Hon Shehu Tahir and other leaders of the house. We have resolved that we are not part of such a move and throw our support behind the Speaker.

“It has been brought to our notice that there are moves to impeach the leadership of the House on grounds of misconduct. We want to debunk the allegation and also allay fears relating to such moves.

“We are comfortable with the leadership of the Assembly and pledge our loyalty and support to Mr. Speaker and all principal officers. In this direction, I wish to move that we pass a vote of confidence on the leadership of this Honourable house,” Umar stated.

Similarly, Hon Aliyu Balarabe Jigo, Kakangi Constituency, Birnin Gwari, aligned himself with the motion, saying the leadership has performed creditably well.

“I will like to align myself with the motion moved by David Umar. The leadership of the House has creditably performed and passed a lot of motions.  The House have worked on some executive Bills and passed for the Executive Governor’s accent,” Jigo stated.

In his remark, the Speaker, Hon Shehu Tahir said his doors are open for any constructive criticism, while reassuring that he will not relent in his efforts to take the state to a greater height.

“On behalf of the leadership of the House, we thank you very much for this foresight and inspirations and will like to reassure that we will be more committed and redouble our effort to the services of people of Kaduna state.” Tahir said.
