NSCDC graduates 260 private guards in FCT, calls for more training

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, FCT Command, on Friday graduated 260 private guard operatives from 40 security companies, urging private guard firms to invest more in training, welfare and professionalism.

The passing-out parade was held at the newly commissioned FCT Command Training Ground, Abuja, to mark the end of a five-day Refresher Training Course on Modern Security Management held from August 10 to 14, 2026.

The FCT Commandant of NSCDC, Olusola Odumosu, who addressed the ceremony, said the training was necessary because the security environment had become increasingly complex and technology-driven.

The Commandant said private security operatives were important stakeholders in Nigeria’s national security system and often served as the first line of observation and early warning.

“Modern security management is no longer about simply guarding gates and checking visitors. Today, private security operatives must be able to identify threats, observe suspicious behaviour, manage access, communicate effectively, respond to emergencies, and protect critical facilities,” he said.

He noted that private guards were present in places where conventional security agencies may not always have a permanent presence, and their ability to recognise and report suspicious activities could help prevent crime.

“Your actions, conduct and professional judgement can either strengthen or undermine the security of the organisation and community you are engaged to protect,” he added.

The Commandant said the newly commissioned training ground represented the Command’s commitment to continuous training and manpower development.

He emphasised that training should not end with the passing-out ceremony, adding that the Command would maintain a continuous cycle of training and retraining to keep operatives abreast of emerging security threats.

He also called on private guard companies to treat their personnel with dignity and ensure proper remuneration, equipment and working conditions.

“Professional security requires professional personnel, and professional personnel require appropriate training, remuneration and welfare. A company cannot demand professionalism from its guards while neglecting their welfare,” he said.

The Commandant stressed that the FCT, as the nation’s capital, hosts critical national assets including government institutions, diplomatic missions, financial institutions and communication facilities that require coordinated security.

He urged the graduating operatives to develop a mindset of vigilance and responsibility in safeguarding lives and Critical National Assets and Infrastructure.

“Do not merely perform security duties as a routine job. Understand the environment. Know the vulnerabilities. Observe changes. Report suspicious activities to us immediately,” he said.

He described private security companies as strategic partners, not just regulated entities, and pledged that the NSCDC FCT Command would continue engagement through training, supervision and collaboration.

The Commandant also commended the Commandant General of NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, and the leadership of the Association of Licensed Private Security Practitioners of Nigeria.
