Premier League champions, Arsenal issued an ominous statement of intent for the upcoming season, comprehensively dismantling FA Cup winners Manchester City 3-0 to lift the 2026 FA Community Shield at the Principality Stadium.

The victory provided a dream start to the campaign for Mikel Arteta’s side, while dealing a bruising reality check to new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca in his first competitive match since succeeding Pep Guardiola.

It took the Gunners just 24 seconds to unlock City’s defence. Midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly threaded a perceptive reverse pass into the box, allowing Italian full-back Riccardo Calafiori to slot a confident strike past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The goal marked the fastest scored in a Community Shield match since 1968. Arsenal completely dictated the tempo of the first half, aided by an eye-catching debut from £75 million summer signing Bruno Guimarães.

The dominant spell was rewarded in the 28th minute when another new signing, Christos Tzolis, looped a cushioned header across the penalty area for Kai Havertz to nod home, doubling the champions’ advantage.

Manchester City struggled significantly to find their footing in the post-Guardiola era. Erling Haaland was starved of service and restricted to a single wayward effort before being substituted early in the second half.

When City did threaten, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya stood firm, notably making an important save to deny a sharp effort from Phil Foden. Any hopes of a Manchester City comeback were thoroughly erased just three minutes after the restart.

In the 48th minute, club captain Martin Ødegaard capably dummy-deceived Donnarumma before rolling the ball into an empty net to round off the 3-0 scoreline.

While City looked disjointed—including a quiet competitive debut for their £116 million midfielder Elliot Anderson—Arsenal looked thoroughly prepared to defend their crown.

The 3-0 victory is Arsenal’s largest win in the competition since they defeated the same opponents by the same scoreline in 2014.

With tactical fluidity, solid defensive structures, and immediate impacts from their summer arrivals, the Gunners start the 2026/27 calendar with silverware already in the cabinet.

With the curtain raiser through, all eyes will now focus on Friday when Arsenal will face newcomers, Coventry City in the opening day fixture for the 2026/27 Premier League season.
