Comrade Aminu Umar Ahmad, the 2027 Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Sokoto State and former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Sokoto State Council, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ahmad confirmed his resignation from the LP in an interview with newsmen in Sokoto on Wednesday, describing the decision as personal.
He said he appreciated the Labour Party for giving him the platform to contest the 2023 governorship election and for the support he received from its members.
Ahmad, who also contested the 2023 governorship election on the LP platform, said he had concluded consultations and decided to align with the APC at both the state and federal levels ahead of the 2027 elections.
He, however, said he would formally complete the process of joining the APC in due course.
On the 2027 elections, Ahmad urged Nigerians to prioritise candidates’ competence, credibility and integrity over political party affiliations.
“The party is just a platform. What matters is electing credible and honest leaders who have the people at heart,” he said.
He also called on Nigerians to demand accountability from elected officials over promises made since 2023.
Ahmad said democracy would be strengthened when voters focused on competence and performance rather than political sentiments.
His defection is expected to attract attention in Sokoto’s political landscape as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
