President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, and the federation’s Secretary-General, Dr Sanusi Mohammed, have resigned from the NFF board.
Other members of the board are also reported to have resigned amid mounting pressure over the recent performances of Nigeria’s national teams and allegations of administrative lapses within the federation.
Sanusi Mohammed confirmed the development in a telephone conversation with Peoples Daily on Thursday but declined to provide further details.
The reported resignations come against the backdrop of growing criticism of the NFF following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups.
The Super Falcons have also faced criticism after their reported underwhelming performance at the recently concluded African Women’s Championship (AWC), with the team also failing to secure qualification for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Gusau is expected to address the media later on Thursday, where he is likely to provide further clarification on the development.
