Two escape death as one-storey building collapses in Kubwa

Two residents narrowly escaped death on Friday morning after being trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed one-storey residential building in the Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The victims survived when the right segment of the structure, a residential building comprising six blocks of flats located at Kubwa 2/2 by Yellow Page suddenly caved in at about 11:30 AM.

The two tenants were inside their ground-floor apartment when the collapse occurred, while other occupants were away for the day.

Alerted by a distress call received at 11:38 AM, search and rescue personnel from the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) rushed to the scene and successfully pulled both victims alive from the debris.

They were immediately taken to the Kubwa General Hospital, where they are currently in stable condition.

Confirming the miraculous escape, FEMD Head of Media and Public Relations, Nkechi Isa, stated:

“The FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) received a distress call about the incident at about 11:38 AM.

“The right segment of the building collapsed, trapping two tenants living on the ground floor apartment. Meanwhile, the two victims of the incident have been taken to the Kubwa General Hospital and are in stable condition.

“Although the two survivors cheated death and no fatalities were recorded, the structural failure led to the extensive destruction of household property.

It added that officials from the Department of Development Control and officers from the FCT Police Command also arrived at the site to cordon off the area and begin investigations into the cause of the collapse.
