The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has strengthened its political structure in Enugu State with the appointment of Nigerian-American businessman, Dr SKC Ogbonnia, as the party’s state leader ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appointment was announced following an expanded meeting of the Enugu State executive of the party held in the state on Saturday.
According to the party’s state secretary, Dr Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor, the decision was based on Ogbonnia’s contributions to the development of the NDC and his role in mobilizing support for the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Okafor said the new leadership arrangement was designed to improve coordination within the party and provide stronger direction as the NDC expands its structures ahead of the 2027 elections.
He described Ogbonnia’s background in business, academia and public affairs as an asset that could strengthen the party’s organizational capacity and electoral campaign in the state.
“With someone like Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, who has demonstrated a strong commitment to the growth and stability of the NDC in Enugu State, victory is assured come 2027,” Okafor said.
He called on party members and supporters to rally behind the new leadership, stressing the need for unity, discipline and collective responsibility as the party positions itself as an alternative to the established political parties.
The Enugu State chairman of the NDC, Dr Johnpaul Anih, also commended the party’s national leadership, particularly National Leader Senator Seriake Dickson and National Chairman Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, for efforts to strengthen the party’s structures nationwide.
Anih assured members that the state executive would intensify mobilization and organizational activities across Enugu ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development comes as the NDC seeks to consolidate its growing political profile in the South-East and build a functional grassroots structure capable of translating support for Obi into electoral strength.
The party said its immediate objective was to establish a united and effective organisation capable of delivering its message of political change to voters across Enugu State and beyond. The PDP said it was prepared to challenge the election in court and pursue contempt proceedings against any individuals or authorities it believes knowingly disregarded subsisting judicial orders.
