2027: Kano political realignment deepens as APC members join NDC

Date:

By Musa Baba Adamu

The political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections in Kano State gathered momentum on Saturday as hundreds of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) crossed over to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The defectors were received into the NDC in Takai Local Government Area by the party’s senatorial candidate for Kano South, Dr Kassim Ibrahim Bataiya.

The latest movement is coming amid increasing competition for political influence in Kano, following the emergence of former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as the NDC’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Since Kwankwaso joined the NDC presidential ticket, the opposition party has witnessed a series of defections involving APC members across parts of Kano State, signaling a fresh contest for the state’s extensive political structures and grassroots support.

The development is also unfolding against the backdrop of a fluid political landscape in which some politicians associated with Kwankwaso’s camp have equally moved in the opposite direction and aligned with the ruling APC.

Kano is expected to be one of the key battlegrounds in the 2027 elections, with the contest likely to be shaped significantly by the rivalry between Kwankwaso and his former political ally, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The competing alignments have intensified efforts by both the APC and NDC to consolidate their support bases ahead of the elections, particularly at the grassroots level.

The latest defection in Takai therefore adds to the growing indications that Kano’s political landscape could witness significant shifts before the 2027 polls, with both major camps seeking to strengthen their structures and expand their influence across the state.
