The sudden passing of Comrade Patrick Osadebamwen, the immediate past chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has created a poignant moment of reconciliation for media practitioners in the nation’s capital.
During a solemn Night of Tributes held in his honor at the NUJ Council Secretariat in Utako on Monday, August 31, the usually vibrant press center transformed into a quiet space of reflection as journalists gathered to sign the condolence register.
The event drew a wide array of media leadership, including past FCT Council chairmen, executive members, national officers, and leaders of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).
Throughout the evening, speaker after speaker emphasized the necessity of forgiveness, unity, and mutual care within the profession.
Current FCT Council Chairman Comrade Grace Ike set the tone for reconciliation in her opening remarks.
Her call for peace was echoed by former council chairmen Malachy Uzendu, Emmanuel Ogbeche, Amos Duniya, and Jacob Edi, alongside NUJ National Secretary Achike Chude.
A defining moment of the evening came through the remarks of Dr. Lemmy Ughegbe, a prominent journalist and media critic, who urged members to put aside past grievances.
“Regardless of our differences, let us be one because I know Patrick would have wanted a united union.
“For the sake of Patrick, please, regardless of our pains, our hurts and our disagreements with one another, this is the time to cross the Rubicon and embrace peace,” Dr. Ughegbe.
Reflecting on recent friction within the council over the past two years, Dr. Ughegbe publicly forgave fellow journalist Emeka Eze over past electoral disputes.
Demonstrating the gesture, he walked across the hall to embrace Mr. Eze, drawing widespread applause and encouraging others to follow suit in honoring the late chairman’s peaceful legacy.
The event also received institutional support from law enforcement.
Representing Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu extended condolences to the NUJ and the deceased’s family.
He announced that the Police Chief pledged support for the family through the Police Trust Fund, reaffirming the strong partnership between the police and the press while urging attendees to contribute toward supporting the family.
As the press community mourns the loss of Comrade Osadebamwen, the responsibility now falls on the leadership and members of the NUJ FCT Council to build upon this newfound unity and strengthen interpersonal relationships across the union.
