The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YOSIEC) has commenced the screening of candidates ahead of the September 26, 2026, local government elections across the state.
YOSIEC Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed Yabani, disclosed this on Tuesday in Damaturu, saying the screening exercise would run from September 1 to 7 across Yobe’s three senatorial zones.
According to Yabani, councillorship candidates are being screened at designated zonal centres, while chairmanship and vice-chairmanship candidates are undergoing screening at the commission’s headquarters in Damaturu.
He said screening teams had already commenced work in Zones A and B, with Potiskum serving as the screening centre for Zone B.
Yabani added that Zone C would have two screening locations, including the zonal headquarters and Nguru, due to the size of the area.
He assured political parties, candidates and other stakeholders that the exercise would be conducted in line with constitutional provisions, relevant electoral laws and YOSIEC guidelines.
The chairman explained that the local government election was rescheduled from June 6 to September 26 following an amendment to the relevant state law.
According to him, the adjustment was necessary to avoid a clash with political party primaries earlier scheduled for May.
Yabani said the screening of chairmanship and vice-chairmanship candidates would be completed by September 7, ahead of the September 26 council polls.
