Sokoto Police warn against fake news on social media, cyberbullying

The Sokoto State Police Command has issued a stern warning to the public regarding the increasing misuse of social media platforms to disseminate unverified information, fake news, and harmful rumors.
The Command noted with serious concern that such actions are capable of causing unnecessary panic and breaching public peace among the good people of the Caliphate.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Sokoto by the spokesperson of the command, DSP Ahmed Rufai.
The Command called on all residents of the state to shun any form of cyberbullying and other related cybercrimes, emphasizing the legal consequences associated with such offenses.
This advisory comes amidst a rise in the circulation of false narratives and misleading content, including fabricated images and out-of-context photographs, which threaten public order and social harmony.
In a coordinated effort, the State Command, in close synergy with other security agencies across the state, is making significant strides in the ongoing fight against violent crimes, including Cattle Rustling, kidnapping, and banditry activities.
These operational gains and recorded successes are not achieved in isolation they are a direct result of the unwavering support, cooperation, and strategic backing provided by the Sokoto State Government, which has continued to prioritize the safety and security of all residents through timely interventions and resource allocations.
CP Hayatu Hassan urged citizens to verify information before sharing and to rely on official channels for accurate news.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and protecting the lives and property of residents.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities or cyber-related offenses to the nearest police station or the Command’s Complaint Response Unit.
