The Social Democratic Party governorship candidate in Nasarawa State, Mohammed Adamu, has promised to prioritise food security and agriculture if elected governor in the 2027 governorship election.
Adamu, a former Inspector-General of Police, made the pledge on Tuesday during an agricultural empowerment programme in the Nasarawa North Senatorial District, where farmers received equipment and other resources to boost food production.
The former IGP said his administration would place agriculture at the centre of its development agenda by equipping farmers to expand cultivation and reduce dependence on manual labour.
“We must empower our farmers with the tools they need to produce more. Food security will be a priority under my administration,” Adamu said.
He explained that providing farmers with appropriate equipment would increase food production while making agriculture more attractive to young people and reducing the physical burden associated with traditional farming.
Adamu said the empowerment programme was designed to provide farmers with inputs, including tractors and other agricultural equipment, to increase their capacity and expand cultivation across the state.
He said reducing dependence on manual farming would also help improve agricultural productivity and strengthen food security in Nasarawa.
Seven beneficiaries who were absent during an earlier agricultural empowerment programme in Akwanga also received three-wheel motorcycles under the latest initiative.
Adamu’s promise comes after his political realignment ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
In May, the former police chief resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress after losing the party’s governorship primary.
His campaign organisation subsequently announced in August that he would contest the governorship election on the platform of the SDP.
