SDP strong, ready for 2027 elections– Gombe

National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prof. Sadiq Gombe, has stated that the party remains strong, united and ready to contest the forthcoming 2027 general elections.

Gombe who was speaking on Wednesday at the SDP National Convention in Abuja, Gombe urged the party faithful to put internal distractions behind them and focus on building a formidable political platform with the capacity to win elections at all levels.

According to him, the party’s structures are ready and running from the national level down to the wards and polling units, notwithstanding the numerous challenges the party faced earlier in the year.

“Our party remains strong, organised and united. We must put every distraction behind us and concentrate on building a party capable of winning elections at all levels,” Gombe stated.

He noted that the party had remained committed to due process, as well as its constitution, the Electoral Act and the Nigerian Constitution.

The SDP boss added that the party was founded on the principles of social justice, equity, fairness, inclusion and equal opportunity.

“Political power must be used to transform society, uplift the people and restore hope to Nigerians”.

The National Chairman further called on members to intensify grassroots mobilisation by strengthening party structures from the polling units to the national level, with special emphasis on youths and women.

“The time has come to move from consultation to mobilisation. Every member must return to the grassroots and strengthen our structures from the polling unit upward,” he said.

In his remarks, the SDP presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo assured Nigerians that the party was determined to tackle poverty and insecurity and to build a nation they would be happy with.

He stressed that leadership was not about occupying public office but about solving the problems confronting citizens.

“Leadership is about accepting the responsibility of solving the problems of the people,” Adebayo said.

He maintained that Nigeria possessed abundant natural resources and urged citizens to support leaders with the capacity and commitment to transform the country.

Adebayo also advocated for a National Assembly that reflects the country’s diversity, urging lawmakers to remain connected to their constituents and regularly engage with the people.

He charged party members to embark on sustained door-to-door mobilisation across the country, insisting that winning elections begins with winning the trust of Nigerians.

“We must win the hearts and minds of Nigerians before we can win the elections,” he said.

Similarly, the SDP Vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Usman Bugaje, appealed to the members to preserve the identity and values of the party, stressing that its strength lies in its ideas, integrity and capacity to provide solutions.

“The strength of the SDP is not in big men. It is in our ideas, our integrity, our honesty and our capacity to provide solutions to the problems confronting Nigerians,” Bugaje stated.

He warned that Nigeria could not afford another cycle of political failure and called for innovative thinking, sacrifice and responsible leadership.

Speaking on behalf of the party’s governorship candidates, former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, urged supporters and state chairmen to mobilise voters and support SDP candidates at all levels beginning from their states.

Prophet Isa El-Buba in his goodwill message called on party stakeholders to remain steadfast and committed to their leaders.

“No amount of money is worth selling your conscience. We must remain committed to the struggle to end poverty and insecurity in Nigeria,” he concluded.
