The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Benue state has accused the state government of paying lips service to the prevention of Ebola Virus Disease, insisting that public schools will not resume unless necessary precautionary measures are put in place to prevent the spread of the disease.

The state chairman, NUT, Mr. Godwin Anya, who made this accusation yesterday lamented over the lackadaisical attitude shown by the State government in preventing the disease.

He explained that their decision not to resume is in line with a directive from the national body of the union.

“We are not resuming until the state government provides the necessary measures against EVD. As I speak to you now, there are no hand sanitizers, gloves, Sick Bay, thermometers etc. in our schools’.

It could be recalled that the federal government had ordered schools to resume for the new academic session yesterday, though some states had declined and rescheduled their resumption date. While the public schools refused to reopen, most private as well as secondary schools resumed yesterday.

All efforts to speak to the State commissioner for Education Mr. Elizabeth Ugoh failed as she refused to pick her calls.
