Gov Yusuf Revives Goron Dutse Reservoir After 30 Years, Begins Water Distribution

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commissioned the commencement of water distribution from the Goron Dutse Reservoir, bringing the facility back into operation after more than three decades of abandonment.

The governor inaugurated the restored facility on Monday, describing its revival as a major milestone in his administration’s efforts to improve potable water supply across Kano metropolis.

Yusuf said the project was part of a broader programme to rehabilitate critical public infrastructure and address longstanding water supply challenges affecting residents.

“This is a historic project for Kano State. The Goron Dutse Reservoir has been abandoned for more than 30 years, and today we are bringing it back into operation to serve the people of Kano,” Yusuf said.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing other critical water projects and expanding access to safe and reliable water across the state.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, said the resumption of operations at Goron Dutse would strengthen the reliability of public water supply in Kano metropolis.

According to Hashim, the facility comprises three reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of about 39.8 million litres. The reservoirs have individual capacities of 10 million litres, 7.3 million litres and 22.5 million litres.

He explained that water is being pumped from the Challawa Water Treatment Plant to the Goron Dutse reservoirs for onward distribution to communities across Kano metropolis.

Hashim said the ₦11 billion project, being executed by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), covers rehabilitation works at the Challawa Water Treatment Plant and the transmission infrastructure supplying Goron Dutse.

He added that the main transmission pipeline from Challawa to the Goron Dutse distribution station stretches approximately 15.6 kilometres.

Although the project was initially scheduled for completion in December 2026, Hashim said the commencement of water distribution represented a significant operational milestone achieved ahead of schedule.

The commissioner commended Governor Yusuf for prioritising the rehabilitation of the reservoir and providing the administrative support needed to return the facility to service.

He said the state government would continue efforts to restore water infrastructure and expand access to potable water for households, businesses and communities across Kano State.
