A teacher, Ibrahim Muhammad, has identified insecurity as his biggest concern about Nigeria, saying the persistent security challenges have undermined peace, livelihoods and the sense of safety among citizens.
Muhammad stated this while speaking with Peoples Daily on Wednesday as Nigeria marked its 66th Independence anniversary.
He said the worsening insecurity had continued to affect the lives of Nigerians and threatened the peace and tranquillity previously enjoyed by the people.
“My biggest concern about Nigeria today is insecurity, which has greatly affected the peace and tranquillity we have enjoyed as a people and as a country,” he said.
Muhammad urged the government to urgently address the security challenges confronting the country.
He said if there was one issue the government should tackle immediately, it was the mindset of the nation’s leaders.
“If there is one thing I would like the government to change immediately, it is the mindset of our leaders,” he said.
The teacher acknowledged that Nigeria’s system of government could make effective leadership difficult, but urged leaders to demonstrate greater commitment to national development.
He called on political leaders to embrace a Pan-Nigerian mindset and place the country’s interests above personal considerations.
“Although I understand that our system of government makes this difficult, I believe our leaders should be more committed to the development of the country and adopt a more Pan-Nigerian mindset—putting Nigeria and the welfare of its people first, rather than prioritising personal interests,” Muhammad said.
