Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, has extended the security alert in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area for another six months following an attack on Binnari community that claimed 58 lives.
Kefas announced the extension of the area’s designation as an Area of Particular Security Concern on Monday during an emergency security meeting at the Executive Chamber of T.Y. Danjuma House in Jalingo, the state capital.
The attack, which occurred on Friday, has heightened security concerns in Binnari and neighbouring communities, leaving residents traumatised and raising fears of further violence.
The police confirmed that suspected armed men invaded Binnari on market day, killing 58 people. Among the victims were 15 people who reportedly drowned in a river while attempting to escape the attackers.
Condemning the killings, the governor described the incident as devastating and assured residents that his administration would pursue justice for the victims and take measures to prevent further attacks.
He warned that criminal elements would not be allowed to undermine the peace and security of Taraba State.
“We have gathered to mourn those we have lost, support those affected, and agree on the actions required to protect our people.
“Our long-standing peace must not be disrupted by those who seek to destroy it. We are on track to identify and apprehend the criminals who have vowed to threaten our peace and security,” Kefas said.
The governor directed relevant authorities to account for all missing persons, establish their whereabouts and provide necessary assistance to families affected by the attack.
He also instructed security agencies to investigate the movements and motives of the attackers, determine whether they were connected to other criminal activities and strengthen collaboration to prevent a recurrence.
Kefas called on traditional rulers, ward and village heads, youths and farmers to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in identifying and apprehending those responsible for the killings.
He urged residents and media practitioners to avoid circulating unverified information, warning that misleading reports could heighten tension and worsen the situation in affected communities.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner of Police, CP Edwin Ogbeghagha, said the governor had directed security agencies to adopt proactive measures to prevent further attacks in Karim-Lamido.
The renewed security alert is expected to reinforce security efforts in the area as authorities work to restore public confidence, protect residents and prevent further loss of lives.
