Bauchi 2027: Why Buba’s head Start may matter more than his party

Date:

By Adamu Lawal Toro

When Senator Shehu Buba Umar defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Redemption Party earlier this year, the move looked, on paper, like a demotion. The PRP has not held serious electoral weight in Bauchi State for decades, and trading the ruling party’s machinery for a legacy platform seemed a curious way to chase Ramat House. Nearly a year on, the calculation looks considerably shrewder.

The governorship race Buba is contesting has changed shape since his defection. Governor Bala Mohammed, midway through his second and final term, is term-limited out of contention in May 2027.

Rather than bow out quietly, he has defected from the PDP to the Allied Peoples Movement to contest the Bauchi South senatorial seat, the very seat Buba is vacating to run for governor. That leaves Bauchi’s top job genuinely open for the first time since 2019, and neither of the state’s dominant parties has settled on a clear standard-bearer to fill it.

Inside the PDP, Bala Mohammed has not publicly anointed a successor. Senator Abdul Ningi and the state’s commissioner for finance, Yakubu Adamu, are both positioning themselves, and history suggests the party’s base has punished imposed candidates before, most notably when it denied senatorial votes to political sons of outgoing governors Muazu and Yuguda. The APC field is more crowded still, with Prof Ali Pate, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, former one-term governor Mohammed Abubakar, and Senator Halilu Dauda Jika all reportedly eyeing the ticket. A primary that wide rarely resolves without bruises, and bruised primaries tend to leak votes in the general election.

Buba, by contrast, has already cleared his hurdle. He won the PRP primary by voice affirmation as sole aspirant, survived a legal challenge from rival aspirant Safiyanu Gambo, and has since had his candidacy formally published by INEC under the 2026 Electoral Act.

Whatever doubts remain about PRP’s organisational depth in the state, Buba enters the race with a settled ticket, a resolved legal question, and a runway his rivals do not yet have. In Nigerian politics, where party primaries can consume as much energy as the general election itself, that head start is not a small thing.

None of this guarantees him the seat. PRP’s actual vote-pulling capacity in Bauchi remains, frankly, untested at scale, and a settled ticket eleven months out is not the same as a winning coalition on election day. Zonal politics will also weigh heavily. Since 1999, every Bauchi governor has come from the Southern senatorial zone, and there is a live argument, reported extensively in this and other papers, that the Central and North zones deserve a turn. Buba, from Bauchi South, will have to contend with that sentiment even as he benefits from his party’s clean primary.

What he does have is a policy pitch already taking shape, which will matter once the contest moves from party arithmetic to public argument. He has pointed to Bauchi’s out-of-school children crisis as an early priority, alongside a push for value addition in agriculture, processing what the state grows rather than shipping it out raw. He has promised a large-scale teacher recruitment and retraining drive to close current classroom shortfalls, paired with digital tools aimed at closing the gap in both access to education and its quality across rural and urban Bauchi. He has also flagged desert encroachment as an environmental priority, and pledged tighter regulation of the state’s mining sector so that Bauchi actually collects the taxes and royalties its mineral resources generate, revenue that currently leaks out with little benefit to the state treasury.

These are credible priorities for a state grappling with weak education outcomes, an underdeveloped agricultural value chain, and creeping desertification in its northern reaches. Whether they survive contact with a full campaign, and whether Buba can convert his procedural head start into an actual electoral coalition, is the real story of Bauchi 2027.
