Nigerian streamer and content creator, Habeeb Adelaja, popularly known as Peller, has apologised to Christians after sparking controversy by dressing in white and asking viewers to address him as Jesus Christ during a livestream.
The incident triggered criticism on social media, with some users accusing the influencer of disrespecting Christian beliefs by using a revered religious figure for entertainment.
The controversy reportedly intensified after one of his guests cautioned him against making statements that could offend people’s religious sensibilities.
Reacting to the backlash, Peller said he never intended to ridicule Christianity or disrespect the faith of his followers.
He explained that he only wore the white outfit without realising that his appearance and comments would generate such a strong reaction.
The streamer appealed to Christians to forgive him, insisting that he was also a Christian and attended the Christ Apostolic Church.
He also made reference to Islam while addressing the controversy, although details of that part of his comments were not immediately clear.
Peller’s apology came amid growing criticism of the use of religious symbols and personalities in online entertainment, particularly during livestreams.
The incident has renewed conversations about the boundaries between entertainment, religious sensitivities and responsible conduct by social media influencers.
