The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) yesterday denied reports the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had received international backing with N 7.5 billion from the EU to fight drug-related crimes in Nigeria.
Peoples Daily had reported on September 26, 2014 that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had received international backing with N 7.5 billion from the EU to fight drug-related crimes in Nigeria.
However, in a swift reaction to the publication, UNODC clarified that the NDLEA did not receive N7.5 bn from the EU in that regard.
It stated, vide an issued letter, signed by its Officer-in-charge, Bala Sanga, that “the European Union (EU) is providing the sum of N34,5 million Euros to UNODC to implement a project titled: “Response to Drugs and Related Organized Crime in Nigeria” over a 52-month period.
“The project has a balanced approach between curbing drug supply and reducing drug demand. The project supports a broad range of activities, one of which is the provision of equipment support to NDLEA for the ageny to better deal with the challenges of the ever-changing drug industry.
“The donation of computers to NDLEA was part of the IT and equipment support by the project towards the development of a data exchange centre at NDLEA headquarters and the establishment of an ICT platform across NDLEA Commands”, it further stated.
