Expect more riots, jail break – Giwa- Amu

Date:

From Matthew Aramunde, Lagos

A major stakeholder in the Prison service and Lagos based Lawyer Human Rights Activist Chief Gabriel Giwa -Amu has said until the Prison authorities and the Ministry of Interior Affairs hence forth, takes proactive steps at ameliorating the deplorable conditions of the prisons, inmates and prisoners, as well as that of the men and officers of the service, there is going to be a repetition of what happened last Friday in the no distance future.

The fiery lawyer, whose NGO, Stephen and Solomon Foundation, have contributed immeasurably to the present facelift of Prisons in Lagos Command. Ogun State , Delta states as well as some facilities in other parts of the country, says he is premising his judgment on what he has observed and during his interaction severally with Inmates and prisoners in the cause of the activities of his NGO.

Sounding visibly angry, Amu noted that he is sometimes taken aback that government officials and the Minister of Interior, past and present, usually delude themselves that it is the height of prisons that guarantees the safety of the facilities and their occupants. Rather, he opined that it is the character and the disposition of the men and officers that does the magic and not otherwise.

He queried the situation where an Assistant Controller of Prisons, an equivalent of an Assistant Inspector General of Police, does not have an official car assigned to him or the rather funny situation where prison officials are conveyed in commercial vehicles to and from court premises in Ogun State not minding the risk to the lives of such officials
