Unilorin Chancellor seeks more funds for Varsities

The Chancellor of the University of Ilorin Dr. Benjamin Ikenchukwu, has urged the federal government to provide more fund for all Nigeria universities as a way to improve education in Universities across the country.

Ikenchukwu stated this while delivering his address at the 30th convocation ceremonies held in Ilorin.

The monarch added that government’s efforts in the education sector will bear little or no fruit except funding and other logistics are carefully put into due consideration in the interest of the future of the nation.

He noted that Unilorin authority identifies with the efforts of federal government to revolutionize the education sector, especially higher institutions.

“The University of Ilorin remains stable, peaceful and committed to high class ideals of academic excellence and sound moral rectitude for both staff and students. I thank the federal government and Unilorin authority for the successes we have recorded so far.

“Our dream and desire is to make this citadel of learning second to none among African Universities and others outside the continent. The towering image of this university as a citadel of academic excellence is the result of the enormous goodwill created by Council in ensuring that both staff and students work and live harmoniously without rancour and acrimony.”

He charged staff of the university to rise to the numerous challenges inherent in the smooth-running of the university system and urged them to possess a lot of tolerance, great patience and understanding to accomplish the enormous responsibilities entrusted to them.

“The steady and monumental growth in infrastructural development and academic recorded by this university is a clear testimony to the foresight, diligence, prudence and devotion to duty by the managers of this University,” said.

In his address entitled: “Unleash Your Potential”, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, disclosed that the University has gone beyond improving on teaching and research infrastructural to make students and scholars globally competitive.

“We have also been engaged in promoting training and re-training of our academic and non-teaching staff. Though, the University offers various forms of support to a conference our academic staff, we recently sponsored some 28 lecturers to a conference in South Africa.

“Besides, a good number of our staff are pursuing their Ph.D in Nigerian and other world universities presently just as the University continues to train the rest of its work force so that they will be able to unleash their potentials”, Ambali said.
