Unsuspected gunmen in the early hours of yesterday invaded Ashagwa village a settlement few kilometers away from Assakio, the headquarters Assakio development area of Lafia local government council, in Nasarawa state.
A source, who spoke to Peoples Daily on condition of anonymity, said the unknown gunmen stormed the town about 8 a.m., shooting sporadically in the air, which triggered panic in the town, as residents fled for their safety.
According to the source, “The invaders were said to have been ambushed at the outskirt of the village before re-enforcing to carry out their heinous mission, but God intervened, as only some houses and few shops were set on ; no death was recorded during the attack”.
His words: “We are surprised with the incessant attack meted out in Ashangwa almost on a weekly basis; the first one happened on a market day a few days ago, when people where busy selling and buying; incidentally, a group of unknown gunmen invaded the market and carted away valuables and today again”.
More worrisome, the persistent attacks that occurred last week at Agyaragu Tofa, Bukan Alu, a suburb of Lafia the capital city as well as Angwan Company, and Arikya in Nasarawa Eggon local government area has created unnecessary tension in Lafia metropolis, as people are now living in fear.
Confirming the incident, the image maker of the Nasarawa state Police Command, ASP Isma’ila Numan told our reporter on phone that there was an attack on Ashangwa community yesterday morning by unknown gunmen, but that there was no death recorded, as according to him, six (6) houses and some motorcycles were set ablaze by the invaders.
“As I am talking to you now, our men are already on top of the situation in order to maintain peace as well as protect lives and property of people”.
ASP Numan further appealed to people of the state not to take laws into their hand as, according to him, citizens should collaborate with the security operatives through reporting people with suspicious movement in their respective vicinity to the Police for prompt action”.
Numan further said doing that would aid the Police track down such criminals, whose aim is to create uncertainty.
