The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has pledged to actively counter the 2027 presidential ambitions of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, dismissing rumours of a permanent return to Rivers State while reaffirming his intention to maintain a hands-on presence in his home state.

Addressing journalists during a monthly media parley in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Wike highlighted the strategic importance of grassroots political engagement as preparations for the 2027 general election gather momentum.

“You want me to fold my hands for Atiku Abubakar to come and win the election?” Wike questioned, emphasising that he would not adopt a passive stance as political manoeuvring intensifies across the country.

Clarifying his frequent visits to Rivers State, the minister dismissed speculation that he plans to vacate his office in Abuja, describing his presence in the state as necessary to remain directly connected with his political base and monitor developments firsthand.

“It’s not about relocating; it’s about coming home to relate with the people and talk to them, and also do those things you know how to do very well, not to take chances.

“I don’t want to sit in Abuja and candidates are saying, ‘Oh, don’t bother, everything is going on well.’ I have to come home and see that all those things are going on,” Wike stated.

Wike noted that maintaining a dual focus on his duties in the nation’s capital and his deep political roots in Rivers State remains essential as the political landscape evolves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
