Removal of wage by NASS is political – NUT National Treasury

Date:

From Ahmed Idris, Birnin Kebbi

Following the recent removal of wages from the Exclusive list to the Concurrent list by the National Assembly (NASS) in the on-going amendment exercise of the 1999 Constitution, reactions from stakeholders has kick-started, as the National Treasury of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, (NUT) Comrade Nasiru Idris on Tuesday described the act by the NASS members as a plan by the politicians to create an avenue whereby the election would be postponed.

He stated this at the weekend, while addressing newsmen in his country home, adding that both Federal Government and the NASS members should find a way of averting it, if not they were ready to embark on an indefinite strike and mobilize other international organizations for their support.

He expressed dismay over the action of the members saying that despite the visit of the union over the issue to ensure that the wages is not removed, they went ahead to plan the removal of the wages.

Saying ‘’we are not going to accept this; we don’t want our workers to suffer’’.

Idris, who also condemned the approval of the local government’s autonomy by the NASS, lamented that if given such autonomy there, then there should be an avenue whereby the local government teacher’s salary would be paid.

It could be recalled that last week, the National Assembly granted the LGs autonomy by amending section 125 of the 1999 Constitution, which would make them to have full third-tier of government without any interference from the state governments.
