Following the contributions of their fallen colleagues in containing the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Nigeria, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Federal Health Institutions
Sector, has called on the Federal Government to immortalize its members that died in the course of duty.
A communiqué signed by Nana Taka and Dr. Ngozi Osunde, Chairman and Secretary respectively, issued at the end of its 29th Annual Scientific Conference and made available to newsmen by its PRO, Comrade Gambo Danfulani, the association commended President Goodluck Jonathan and the Minister of Health, for their giant strides in containing the Ebola outbreak in the country.
They however want the Federal Government to train, equip and involve nurses in all strata of disaster management in order to ensure swift response in case of disaster emergencies.
The association also called on the Chief Executives of all Federal Health Institutions to ensure establishment of Disaster Response Teams in the irrespective establishments.
According to the Communiqué, the Congress in session condemned in total, the reluctance of Government and Federal Ministry of Health in meeting the agreed demands of HOHESU members who are presently on strike.
It therefore called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, meet all their demands in order to restore industrial harmony in the health sector.
Earlier, during his speech at the opening ceremony of the conference, National chairman of the association, Nana Takai said this year’s theme: “Current Trends in the Management of Health Emergencies, The Role of the Nurse”, could not have come at a better time than now, when the country is faced with varied emergency health challenges arising from man-made and natural causes.
He particularly commended nurses and other JOHESU members who were on ground doing their best during the Ebola crises to ensure infected patients received the best care, adding that “even when the hospitals were disserted by the doctors in hunt for money”.
