Boko Haram: Over 800 school buildings, 664 students affected – Report

An independent evaluation and assessment performance project report on the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) by the Coalition of Civil society Groups (CCSG) has revealed that the insurgency in the North-East has affected over 800 school buildings and 664 students.

Presenting the report to journalists during a press briefing yesterday, the president, Comrade Etuk Bassey Williams, said the bleak future that Nigeria’s education sector faces means that it would be not be able to meet the education for all goals 1, 2 and 4 by the year 2015 as Nigeria is one of the only 15 countries that UNESCO projects will have fewer than 80% of its primary school age children enrolled by 2015.

He said the assessment carried out in collaboration with Sihle Masonso-Africa partnership for civil Society, Kristen Strong-World economic Development and Emeretine Christisle-Centre For Educational Development United Kingdom, among others, was on the progress made so far in the formulation and implementation of policies for the successful operation of the Universal Basic Education in Nigeria and the role of the Universal Basic education Commission (UBEC) in actualizing the core mandate of an unhindered access without prejudice to primary and junior secondary school education by all Nigeria children.

William called for the development of national education policy, to address humanitarian and emergency situation that may arise as a result of unforeseen crisis situation, while advocating for more fund for basic education in the country.

The research shows that conflicts, gender discrimination, child labour, ignorance and poverty are majorly responsible for the high rate of out-of-school children in Nigeria among other things.
