Villagers, farmers laud World Bank over roads

The villagers and farmers of Mayo- Lamja village have expressed appreciation to the World Bank and French Agency for habitation of their feeder road linking them to other parts of Mayo- Belwa local government area, in Adamawa state.

The commendation was dropped by the leader of Mayo-Lamja Women Farmers Corporative Association, Mrs. Dorothy Colman, in an interactive session with journalists recently, stressing that the development was taking a right decision at the right time, considering the untold hardship farmers are experiencing when transporting their farm products after harvest.

Mrs. Colman explained that the World Bank and the French Development Agency have offered $ 243 million in grants for construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of rural feeder roads in four Nigerian states.

The four participating states under the agreement are Adamawa, Enugu, Niger and Osun, which are expected to pay three percent of the total project costs under as counterpart funding.

According to Colman, the rehabilitation of the roads which is twenty kilometer off   Mayo-Belwa – Jalingo highway has eased the transportation problem of the farmers in the area especially in transporting their farm produces.

“Before the rehabilitation of the road, the mode of transporting our farm produces was a big challenge.

“But now, we found it much easier to transport our goods and even to interact with other parts of the state because of the reduction in cost of the transportation by fifty per cent.” Colman stated.

She called on the federal and state governments to extend the rehabilitation project to link with Tola town up to Jada local government area in the state.

She explained that among the major farm productions in the area include maize, Yam, Rice and groundnut, cattle rearing, vegetable and mongo among others

However, the chairman state project monitoring Committee of RAMP-2, Engr. Denis Chinda, confirmed that a total of N91, 000.000 was spent on the rehabilitation of that particular road.

“Under the scheme, 500 kilometers of rural roads would be constructed in state.” Chinda said.

He said under the project, ten people were recruited for the rehabilitation of the road and were on twenty thousand naira monthly salary.
