Court remands motorcyclist for knocking down pregnant woman

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa state, on Monday ordered that Yakubu Aram, 20, a motorcyclist, be remanded in prison custody for allegedly knocking down pregnant pedestrian woman.

Senior Magistrate Habila Abundaga gave the order after the accused pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of dangerous driving and driving without due care and attention brought against him.

Abundaga, who refused to grant the accused bail, ordered him to engage the service of a counsel.

He adjourned hearing in the case until Jan 14.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Joseph Ahua told the court that Monica Abela of Masaka, Mararaba, reported the matter at the Sani Abacha Road, Police Station in Mararaba on December 13.

Ahua said that the accused was riding his unregistered Bajaj boxer motorcycle in a dangerous manner along Masaka.

He said at the same time, the complainant, a pregnant woman was trying to cross the road to the other side.

“In the process, the accused knocked her down, causing her severe injuries.

“She was rushed to the medical centre in Mararaba where she is still receiving treatment,’’ Ahua said.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 22 and 21 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
