Housekeeper faces N1.2m theft charge

A housekeeper, Maria Moses, who allegedly stole property estimated at N1.2 million belonging to her employer, was recently brought before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court, in Lagos.

Moses, 20, who was living with her employer at No. 12, Fatai Kadiri St., Shomolu, Lagos, is being tried for stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Chris Takim, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 21 at No. 12, Fatai Kadiri St., Shomolu, Lagos.

Takim said that the accused stole six set of gold jewelry worth N1.2 million belonging to her employer, Mrs. Kunbi Bashua, and absconded to her home town, Cotonou, Republic of Benin.

He said that the complainant called the accused’s mother, who brought her back to Lagos, and the incident was reported to the police.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 278 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be sentenced to three years imprisonment on conviction.

The accused denied the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Bola Folarin-Williams, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Jan. 26, for mention. (NAN)
