Niger NUJ, RATTAWU commence indefinite strike over allowance

Date:

Niger state council of Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts workers Union of Nigeria has on Monday commenced an indefinite strike following the refusal of the state government to implement weigh-in allowance for members in the civil service.

This was sequel to the directive of the National Secretariat in its December 18th letter to media workers “NUJ and RATTAWU” in the states to continue with their strike until the weigh-in allowance is implemented.

But due to mutual understanding the Unions decided to call off the strike action after a meeting with the Head of Service. Despite the mutual respect reached at the meeting the Niger state government was not moved to implement the agreement forcing the worker to commence strike on Monday 12th January, 2015 indefinitely.

Investigation revealed that all the state owned media houses in Niger state remained closed and locked since on Monday this week.

In an interview with Niger state council of Nageria Union of Journalists, Comrade Iliya Garba said the struggle started since 2015 but discovered all along were been deceived, insisting that the strike will continued indefinitely until the demand is fully implemented.

Iliya noted that they were assured by the Head of Service that it was captured in 2015 budget, urging the state house of assembly to consider and approve it as it was geared toward improving the well being of members.
