When girls are empowered through education and equal opportunities, entire communities benefit. Educated women are more likely to contribute to economic growth, promote healthier families, and inspire future generations. Likewise, boys who are raised to respect and value girls help build a more just and inclusive society. Every child, regardless of gender, deserves encouragement to pursue their dreams and develop their talents to the fullest.
In many cultures in Nigeria, male children are often given preference over female children because they are seen as heirs, carriers of the family name, and future providers. This mindset unfairly places girls at a disadvantage, denying them equal opportunities, recognition, and sometimes even affection within their own families.
The truth is that both sons and daughters possess unique abilities and can contribute meaningfully to their families and society. Many women today excel in leadership, business, education, science, and other fields, proving that gender does not determine worth or potential.
It is true that men have traditionally occupied many positions of authority and leadership in society. Across the world, many presidents, community leaders, husbands, brothers, and providers are men, and their contributions should be acknowledged and respected. However, recognizing the role of men should not mean diminishing the worth of women. Women too are mothers, teachers, sisters, wives, caregivers, and leaders who make valuable contributions to their families and society. In the past, many women did not have the privilege of accessing education because the female child was underestimated. Therefore, girls should be given the same opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed as their male counterparts. No woman should be oppressed, undervalued, or denied her rights simply because of her gender.

A progressive society is one that appreciates the strengths of both men and women and ensures that every individual is treated with dignity, fairness, and respect. It is time for society to move beyond outdated beliefs and embrace the principle that every child deserves equal love, support, and opportunity, regardless of whether they are born male or female. A child’s value should never depend on gender but on their character, abilities, and the positive impact they can make in the world.
