Kingsley Otu’s photographic series at the Abuja Art Exhibition from 1- 15 October 2022 presents a captivating exploration of daily life in Kubwa, a residential district in Bwari Local Government Areaof the Federal Capital Territory in Nigeria. Through his lens, we experience the richness of local markets, the serene beauty of natural landscapes, and the industrious spirit of street vendors. Otu’s eye for detail, composition, and use of light transforms everyday scenes into compelling works of art, inviting viewers to step into the vibrant world he captures.
Otu’s selected works detailing life in Kubwa include “Kubwa Street Trading”, “Fruit Market”, and “The Landscape: “Kubwa Hill”.
Kubwa Street Trading
In “Kubwa Street Trading,” Otu zeroes in on the life of a street vendor. The photograph is rich with narrative detail, from the vendor’s poised stance to the neatly arranged coconuts on his cart. The earthy tones of the dirt road and the vendor’s attire create a warm, inviting palette, while the background buzzes with activity, capturing the essence of the daily hustle. The hills in the background serve as a reminder of the town’s geographical context, grounding the scene in its specific locale. The use of natural light in this photograph is masterful, casting soft, even illumination that highlights the textures and details of the vendor’s wares and surroundings. The lighting accentuates the vendor’s focused expression and the everyday heroism of his labor, making the viewer feel a part of the daily rhythm of Kubwa.

Fruit Market
In “Fruit Market,” Otu immerses us in the bustling atmosphere of a local market. The composition is a riot of colours and textures, with the lushness of the fruits and vegetables almost palpable. The scene is alive with activity, as vendors and buyers engage in the timeless dance of commerce. The overhead umbrellas create a patchwork canopy, casting dappled light that adds depth and dynamism to the photograph. The meticulous arrangement of produce, from the pineapples and papayas to the leafy greens, speaks to the abundance and diversity of local agriculture. Otu’s use of light and brightness is particularly striking, with the vivid hues of the produce contrasted against the more subdued tones of the vendors’ attire, creating a visual feast that is both harmonious and vibrant. The natural lighting, filtered through the colourful umbrellas, creates a soft, diffuse glow that highlights the freshness and vitality of the market goods.
This exhibition is a must-see for anyone interested in contemporary African photography, offering a profound and intimate look at the heart of Kubwa.

Kubwa Hill
Kubwa Hill offers a serene counterpoint to the market scene’s frenetic energy. The photograph captures the quiet majesty of a hill overlooking the township of Kubwa. Otu’s perspective places the viewer at a distance, allowing the natural beauty of the landscape to unfold gradually. The hill, cloaked in verdant greenery, rises against a brooding sky, evoking a sense of tranquility and permanence. The houses nestled at the hill’s base add a human scale to the composition, highlighting the symbiotic relationship between the community and its environment. The overcast sky, heavy with the promise of rain, adds a layer of moodiness to the scene, emphasising the cyclical nature of weather and life. The subdued lighting in this photograph, with its soft shadows and muted colours, enhances the sense of calm and introspection, inviting viewers to reflect on the timeless beauty of nature.
