Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) alumna, Khadijah Halliru, has suggested adopting the Canadian municipal governance model in Nigeria to improve governance systems and boost public trust.

Halliru, a leadership coach and counselor at the Town of Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada, made this recommendation during a public lecture at ABU’s Faculty of Public Administration.

The lecture, titled “Mastering Public Leadership: Building a Governance Culture that Moves Nigeria Forward,” aimed to shift students’ focus from individual academic pursuits to national responsibility. Halliru emphasized the importance of universities in fostering ethical consciousness and service-based leadership.

Prof. Abubakar Mohammed Madaki, Director of the Institute of Administration at ABU, identified key challenges in Nigerian governance, including lack of accountability, integrity, inadequate communication, mistrust, and poor strategic thinking. He noted that ABU is well-positioned to provide practical solutions to these challenges through research-based pathways and dialogue.
