The Chairman of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) Zaria branch Professor Luka Mai Lafiya has said accounting profession is a key to the economic development of a country.
He stated this at the International Accountants Day celebration held at the CBN Centre for Economic and Finance, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.
Professor Mai Lafiya said the level of commitment exhibited by members is very encouraging and urged them to continue with this kind of commitment.
He said, this year’s celebration kickstarted with a Lecture by Barrister Hadiza Ali, and soon after the Lecture members proceeded to ABUTH, Shika, and donated some items to the patients.
The branch Chairman urged members to redouble their contributions towards achieving their goals.
Delivering the Lecture titled “ Removing Fuel Subsidy: Which Way To Go? Barrister Hadiza Ali charged the Nigerian government to work on building public trust and confidence in the citizenry to fix the trust deficit already in the minds of citizens.
Also, the government should address the issues of unemployment through enabling policies and the creation of social investment programmes.
According to her, good governance, and accountability can be achieved by transparently managing the transition, redirecting savings to benefit citizens, and implementing measures to prevent corruption.
Barrister Hadiza noted with concern that removing fuel Subsidy is a complex policy decision with potential economic and political challenges.
The guest lecturer said the general impact is holistic and not necessarily only the rural poor because all and sundry were affected because of the spiral effect associated with the high price of fuel.
On corporate responsibility, the association has donated some items to the Emergency Ward, Accident and Emergency Ward, and Children’s Emergency Ward at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Shika.
