Activists demand meritocracy in public service

Human rights activists in Nigeria have tasked the relevant agencies of government to institutionalize meritocracy in public service in Nigeria.
They said the move would help to redirect the Country on the path of progress, economic prosperity and check sectional agitation for dismemberment of Nigeria by ethnic jingoist.
This was the submission of Dr. Sam Amadi, former Chairman and Chief executive Director of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the former Edo state Attorney-general, Dr. Osagie Obayuwana on Monday in Benin City.
Amadi, spoke while delivering a Public lecture series entitled:
“shrinking space Civic space and need to explore innovation as Panacea” in honour of the Executive Director, African Network for economic and Environmental Justice (ANEEJ), David Ugolor.
The keynote Speaker however warned that “if Nigerian ruling elites continue to value particularistic ethics rather than ethical universalism; If Nigerian ruling elites continue to reward privilege and prerogative rather than performance, then we will remain poor and unproductive”.
Amadi whose keynote address was delivered by Dr. Paul Omokhua, stated further that “Nigeria’s survival depends on how quickly it can transition into an innovative society”.
On his part, Dr. Osagie Obayuwana who was a former Presidential Candidate of National Conscience Party (NCP), challenged activists not to leave the responsibility of the transforming Nigeria to only elected representatives in order to expand the shrinking space for civic engagement.
“The Government right now is being used to create business opportunities for party leaders. That cannot transform Nigeria.
“Today, in Nigeria, it is not what you have that provides you the opportunity to serve but who you know”, he said.
In his welcome address, the Convener of the lecture, Reverend David Ugolor, announced empowerment package to 10 women.
He said the programme marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life by making sure that there is more investment in strengthening the voice of the people”.
He described the proposed Bill to emasculate Non-Governmental organizations by the national Assembly was ill-conceived.
