Adamawa state reverses basic education curriculum to 9 years

The Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB) and the stakeholders in education sector have disclosed the reversal of basic education curriculum in the state to nine consecutive years.

The development was made public yesterday at the conference hall of the UBEB during the meeting between management and stakeholders in Yola, Adamawa state.

In her presentation, the chairperson of the State Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB) Dr. Kaletapwa Farauta said the occasion marked the first public presentation of the 9 years revised Basic Education Curriculum and the kick- off of the training of school teachers on the use of the Teachers’ Guide for the implementation of the revised curriculum.

She said the revised curriculum was in answer to the adoption of Internationally Agreed Goals of Development (IAGD) especially the Education for all (EFA) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) that began in the year 2000 which introduced the drive in the global and national contexts to devise strategies to attain these goals. She said the first batch of learners graduated from JSS in June 2011 having sat for new Basic Education Curriculum Certificate Examination (BECE).

Farauta noted that revised curriculum is to be implemented by both Public and Private schools based on the (IAGD) innovation which comprised of English Studies, Mathematics Cultural and Creative Arts, one Nigerian Language, Basic Science and Technology, Pre Vocational Studies, Religious National Values, French, Business/Entrepreneurship Studies and Arabic which is optional. She said the implementation of the revised BEC has been approved by NCE to commence in September 2014, beginning from primary I and JSS I and gradually phasing out the old Basic Education Curriculum.

In his keynote address, Dr, Mustafa Saidu, the state Commissioner of Education, said the meeting took place at a critical point in the annals of educational development in the state.
