The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the continued detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, describing it as a serious violation of human rights and a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

In a strongly worded statement, the opposition party said El-Rufai has been held by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) for over 30 days without being formally charged or arraigned in court.

According to the ADC, the prolonged detention is illegal and unconstitutional. The party alleged that there are attempts to pressure the former governor into abandoning his political affiliations, warning that such actions amount to the misuse of state institutions.

“El-Rufai honoured an invitation by law enforcement in good faith, yet he remains in custody without charges,” the party said, adding that denying him access to family members and medical care raises further concerns about his welfare.

The ADC did not hold back in its criticism of the current administration, led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of undermining democratic principles and the rule of law.

The party also warned that it would escalate the matter to the international stage, including petitioning Amnesty International and other human rights bodies, if El-Rufai is not released immediately.

Describing indefinite detention as a hallmark of dictatorship, the ADC called on key government officials, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the leadership of the ICPC, to ensure compliance with the Constitution.

The party stressed that law enforcement agencies must not be used as tools for political suppression, insisting that El-Rufai should either be released or charged in court without further delay.

It also urged Nigerians to speak out, warning that the erosion of rights often begins with one case before spreading more widely.
